PPG Paints has selected Olive Sprig (PPG1125-4), an elegant gray-green tone, as its 2022 Color of the Year.
According to PPG, Olive Sprig is a “relaxing, but enticing” shade that evokes the color and feeling of aloe vera or a fragrant plant. It is suited to either indoor or outdoor use, blends well with natural materials, and is recommended to pair against brass accents, wood tones, and furniture with curved forms.
The company’s choice of color was inspired by the notion of healing, regrowth, and reconnection to nature, particularly in a world still coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on life.
“As many of us know following a year of lockdown, the easiest way to shift your mindset is to change your environment,” says Amy Donato, senior color marketing manager at PPG paint. “DIYers, property managers, designers, and architects are shifting away from the stark, neutral palettes of yesterday and opting for color in all forms. Call it rebellion, but we are certainly here for the resurgence of optimistic colors to guide us into a new era of home design.”
In PPG’s recent Global Color Forecasting Workshop, the company’s experts determined that consumers have historically gravitated to “more colorful” aesthetics after “difficult inflection points” in history, such as the Roaring '20s or the post-Depression. In keeping with this trend, PPG has observed that today’s home décor is taking inspiration from the antiquity, baroque, and renaissance eras of art, reflecting “an optimistic rebellion, a sign of personal expression, and soothing self-care.”
In addition to the Color of the Year, PPG has collected three color palettes expected to “resonate” with homeowners and designers in 2022.
- Invaluable features rich, bold tones, including Gooseberry, Castle Stone, and Ancient Copper, recommended for pairing with dark woods and brass accents.
- Introspective includes soft, neutral colors that complement Olive Sprig, including Tea Time, Peace, Silver Service, and Pine Whisper.
