In recent years, sustainability and protecting natural resources have become increasingly important for consumers concerned about their impact on the environment. Many consumers weigh the environmental impact in many of the choices they make, including in the products used in their homes.

In honor of Earth Day 2022, BUILDER is highlighting six products that deliver sustainability without sacrificing function or aesthetic appeal. From healthy indoor air solutions to vegan cabinet hardware, these innovative products put the environment first.

Recycled Bath Tiles
The Abstra Collection by Kohler WasteLAB is a series of bespoke brushed and matte tiles made from nearly 100% recycled waste materials. The collection, which evokes the appearance of carved or sculpted clay, features two different styles: the abstract patterned title of Abstra Feature or the unadorned field tile of Abstra Standard. The WasteLAB at Kohler leveraged the Kohler WI Pottery’s wastewater stream to create the Abstra’s tile body. The material, consisting primarily of pottery waste clay and glaze, is dewatered and processed into a usable base material. Both the Abstra Feature and Abstra Standard tiles are available in 3-inch-by-12-inch, 4-inch-by-4-inch, 6-inch-by-6-inch, and 6-inch-by-12-inch field sizes. Kohler says the collection is ideal for any vertical dry interior applications and that the matte shades can accommodate wet spaces, such as showers and submerged areas.

Healthy Air Solutions
Models E080, E100, and E130 in AprilAire’s e-series dehumidifiers deliver 23% annual energy savings to consumers above conventional products and feature the Energy Star Most Efficient 2022 rating, according to the manufacturer. AprilAire says the products are the first whole-house dehumidifiers to receive such an Energy Star certification. The e-series model dehumidifiers remove moisture with less energy and feature expanded capacity of more pints per day—from 80 to 130. AprilAire says the products are intended to control humidity in the whole home and help protect against structural damage, pests, and mold.

Water-Saving Bathroom Products
Duravit, a bathroom product manufacturer, offers a suite of products made from ceramic, one of the most environmentally friendly and hygienic materials. The manufacturer’s SensoWash ceramic collection of toilets are durable and long-lasting, capable of withstanding decades of use. Toilets in Duravit’s portfolio meet WaterSense and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s performance mandates for high-efficiency toilets, which produce 1.28 or fewer gallons per flush and help save nearly 13,000 gallons of water savings for the average family each year. Duravit’s C.1 faucet collection also offers water-saving properties of less than 1.2 gallons per minute. In addition to its focus on environmentally friendly materials and water-saving products, Duravit uses materials that can be resupplied and reused in different ways, to promote sustainability and recycling.

Schwinn Hardware

Vegan Cabinet Hardware
Schwinn Hardware remains committed to sustainable design with its Vegan By Design Collection of cabinet hardware made from natural furniture linoleum, which is derived from linseed, or flaxseed. The collection incorporates furniture linoleum into four cabinet handle designs: Schwinn 33828, Schwinn 34026-9, Schwinn 34026-96, and Schwinn 22447-32. While linoleum has been available as a building product for over 150 years, it has recently become more popular as a furniture design material because of its sustainable, durable, naturally antimicrobial, and nonallergenic properties. Linoleum is biodegradable and does not release harmful gasses or toxins into the air as it breaks down.

Newport Brass

Water-Efficient Faucet Collection
The Muncy Bath Collection from Newport Brass is WaterSense compliant, meeting the EPA’s criteria for water efficiency and delivering over 45% water savings over traditional 2.2 gallons per minute faucets. The collection’s design incorporates a contemporary canvas that pairs with knurled details that complement the contours of the widespread snout.
