The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, California, market ranked No. 14 on last year’s Local Leaders list with 9,988 new-home closings. It jumped four spots to No. 10 with 13,119 closings in 2021, passing Washington D.C.; Nashville, Tennessee; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Denver.
Tri Pointe Homes closed 1,192 homes in the market in 2021, with 8.3% of the market share. The national builder, which used to be known as TRI Pointe Group and operated six well-known home building brands across the country, consolidated all its divisions under a single name—Tri Pointe Homes—in 2021 as well.

In Banning, California, on the east side of the Riverside market and adjacent to Beaumont, the builder’s Atwell master plan opened in April 2020 and is located at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains with views of the adjacent San Jacinto Mountains. It features five distinct neighborhoods—Arroyo, Cienega, Centerstone, Landmark, and Horizon—and will include over 4,000 homes at full build-out.
Inspired by its natural surroundings, Atwell will offer ample unstructured open space throughout the community. A trail system winds throughout, connecting residents to amenities, and five different recreation centers will all feature a pool, a tot lot, and outdoor dining options.
“You literally pass by it when you’re headed to Palm Springs, and we’re in such close proximity to the freeway that gets you to the Riverside area,” says Francine Wallace, vice president of community experience at Tri Pointe. “Initially, we did see a pool of people that were moving up from Beaumont and the immediate surrounding areas. Now two years into it, we’re seeing buyers spreading out farther into the Riverside spaces.”

In the Horizon neighborhood, home designs feature 2,432 to 3,293 square feet, four to five bedrooms, two-and-a-half to three bathrooms, and three-bay garages with California Craftsman architecture. Plan 2, the medium-sized model at 2,844 square feet, includes a welcoming porch, an expansive great room, a single downstairs bedroom, flex spaces, and indoor-outdoor connections.
“There are hidden treasures in these floor plans, and you’ll have little nooks for your own creativity,” Wallace says. “They get the size, bedroom count, lot size, and garage space in a fully amenitized community at an affordable price point. It’s kind of the perfect package when you’re looking at Horizon.”
