Home buyers are constantly setting the bar higher and constantly moving the target for builders. Buyers seek better performance, improved flexibility, more customization, lower costs, and anything else that can be incorporated into a home.

Home builders have to prioritize to come up with as close as they can get to meet home buyer demand. Making that commitment shifts everything else in the operational cycle.

The 2018 BUILDER Concept Home, the reNEWable Living Home by Meritage Homes, is a real-world example of a home built by a production builder that still pushes the edge, says John McManus, vice president and editorial director of the Residential Group at Hanley Wood.

In this video, McManus explains how Meritage is a leader in exploring what a home buyer truly needs and wants to develop a product from which the buyer can benefit. This concept home looks at how engaged a builder needs to be with home buyers to create their desired living experience.

The reNEWable Living Home will demonstrate how intimate and how real builders need to be in order to respond to buyers. Today, consumers want a say in how their home is personalized. They want to know that it’s not wasting energy and not wasting money, and they want to have a say in how it functions for them on a day-to-day basis. They also want their home to contribute to their health and well-being.

Throughout the project, Meritage Homes also is taking a deep dive into the multigenerational housing trend. The home is a testament to how a pioneering, innovative builder can adapt its current model to create a new product line.

“Builders have to be responsive to so many different things,” says McManus. “This home is going to advance that in a big way.”
