Exhibition: American Metal

The Corcoran Gallery of Art presents a survey of modern American blacksmith Albert Paley’s career.

1 MIN READ

Albert Paley is the only metalsmith to receive an Institute Honors award from the American Institute of Architects. One of the commissions that helped launch his career was a set of gates for the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. The Renwick is also the former home of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, so it’s fitting that the Corcoran is now presenting the first major retrospective of Paley’s work.

The exhibition opens on June 28 and offers visitors more than 75 pieces to view. Six galleries will be filled with metal sculptures, gates, tables, lamps, candleholders, jewelry, doors, and other works. Insights into Paley’s artistic process will also be open for exploration through drawings, models, photographs, and maquettes. A catalogue and a family guide are available for the exhibition, and the museum will host several public programs.
