ARCHITECT‘s Katharine Keane reports the AIA revealed that the Iowa Women in Architecture (IaWia) and the Architecture, Construction, Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program are the two winners of the 2018 Diversity Recognition Program, which has honored “architects and organizations actively committed to making the architecture profession a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable profession” for the last 10 years. Des Moines, Iowa–based nonprofit IaWia aims to empower and advance women in design, to educate communities, and to serve as a resource for women in their careers.
The Rockville, Md.–based AEC Mentor program was founded in 1994 to encourage high school students to pursue careers in architecture, engineering, and construction, and it has experienced a 66 percent success rate in the past six years.
The winners were selected by jurors Steven Spurlock, FAIA, the former regional director of AIA Middle Atlantic Region; 2017 AIA Associates Award winner, Linsey Graff, Assoc. AIA; and AIA Middle Atlantic strategic council regional representative Jonathan Penndorf, FAIA. IaWia and the ACE Metor Program will be recognized in June at the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture in New York City.
