In 2021, there were 313,153 homes in the United States that were issued a HERS Index Score. The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) recently delved into that number to identify the top 10 states with the highest number of new single-family and duplex homes HERS rated last year.
The top performing state was Texas with over 70,000 homes and an average HERS Index Score of 59. The state supersedes the second place state of Arizona by roughly 47,000 rated homes.
Rounding out the top 10 states are Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, South Carolina, Indiana, Virginia, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.
The top four states—Texas, Arizona, Florida, and North Carolina—also happen to house some of the country's top new-home markets ranked by 2021 closings, according to BUILDER's 2022 Local Leaders list.
