Landsea Homes has launched its first environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report following the establishment of its ESG Committee in March of last year. The report is aligned with Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) standards for home builders and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the company, the principles of sustainability have been embedded in its approach to business since the delivery of its very first home nearly a decade ago. CEO John Ho says, "Since our founding, sustainability has been one of our guiding principles and highest priorities. Our commitment to acting with integrity, supporting our team, building thriving communities, and exercising environmental stewardship have long been embedded within strategic planning across our business operations to create long-term value for our stakeholders."
Pressing forward in sustainability, Landsea Homes implements home management systems including Wi-Fi mesh networking; Wi-Fi garage openers; and smart locks, lights, and thermostats. Energy Star-rated appliances; enhanced insulation; and residential solar, battery charging, and car charging are included in energy-efficiency efforts while air purifiers and low-VOC materials support clean air. As a priority in sustainability, water conservation initiatives include recycled water irrigation, weather smart irrigation, tankless water heaters, and Xeriscaping.
"Each year, we strive to improve and increase our implementation of the latest sustainable innovations to provide our home buyers with cutting-edge designs, a healthier lifestyle, and best-in-class, energy-efficient homes," Ho adds.
Prior to acquisitions and development, the company’s sustainability initiatives begin, the report details. From reviewing environmental risks of land acquisitions to checking for the presence of wildlife habitats within construction areas, the report notes additional ways in which Landsea Homes develops eco-friendly properties.
In terms of governance, the Landsea Homes board works alongside management to oversee ESG at the company. Additionally, the report cites various tools that are used to monitor and protect the company’s data security, including a Cybersecurity Awareness Policy that requires Landsea Homes users to complete training on cybersecurity risks and threats.
Since 2020, while expanding its footprint to Arizona, Colorado, Florida, and Texas, Landsea Homes has aimed to broaden its portfolio to include more affordable and financially accessible options, the report says. Socially, Landsea Homes has partnered with HomeAid America to help renovate housing for the unhoused by providing home furnishings, roofing and flooring, and plumbing and electrical fixtures.
The report notes that Landsea Homes added paid volunteer time off up to 16 hours to its employee benefits this year. The company also supports employees’ mental health through its Employee Assistance Program and actively trained in workplace safety and related laws and regulations, the report says.
