For the 10th episode of Zonda’s Inspirational Leadership with the Best in Home Building podcast series, principal Mollie Carmichael interviews Doug Bauer and Tom Mitchell from Tri Pointe Homes.
Bauer and Mitchell both started their careers in the banking industry. Their paths collided while working at The Lyon Co.—where, coincidentally, they had both vied for the same position. Years later in 2009, while they were both in between ventures, opportunity came knocking in the form of a chance to lead a new home building project. One frantic weekend later, Tri Pointe Homes was born, at the height of the recession. Despite the economic uncertainty at the time, Tri Pointe Homes had rapid success and is now No. 16 on the Builder 100 list.
“It really is nice having Doug as a business partner, and I think, vice versa,” says Mitchell. “Because while we complement each other, we can also substitute for each other.”
