Remodelers and home builders responding to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Window and Patio Door Satisfaction Study reported that they have been taking on more remodeling and window repair/replacement projects and less new construction work in 2010 compared with 2009. Not surprisingly—considering the state of the economy—demand for new construction is still low and isn't expected to fully recover for a few years. Spending on remodeling, however, is predicted to increase substantially through 2011.

According to the recently published report, homeowners are focusing more on product quality and warranty and repair services than they did during the housing boom years. It's not surprising that consumers are more intent on getting their money's worth out of any home improvement purchase since they are likely to have to remain in their homes until the housing market recovers. If the predictions for the remodeling market play out, homeowners will have a greater influence on builder and remodeler purchase decisions and brand preferences, notes Jim Howland, senior director of J.D Power's real estate industries practice.

The study measured satisfaction with residential windows and patio doors based on builder and remodeler evaluations of performance in seven categories: product, warranty and repair service, price, customer service and support, credit/billing process, delivery, and ordering process. Each window and patio door manufacturer is scored on a 1,000-point scale.

Simonton Windows ranked highest with a score of 826. According to the more than 2,300 builders and remodelers surveyed, Simonton excels in six out of the seven performance categories: warranty, price, customer service and support, delivery, credit/billing, and ordering process.

Andersen Windows and Doors, ranked second with a score of 804, is reported to perform particularly well in the product category. Third-ranked Pella scored 796 points, followed by Marvin with 795 points.

Rounding out the J.D. Power survey rankings are Integrity Windows (788), Milgard (780), Atrium (776), Silver Line (747), and Jeld-Wen (743).
