The Washington-based Surface Transportation Policy Project states in a recent report that transportation is the second largest annual expense for American families, totaling more than three times the cost of health care. Only housing exceeded transportation as an expenditure. The situation is worse for lower-income families, the report says. Transportation inhibits wealth creation and hinders homeownership.
