Home buyer demographics are shifting. As if builders didn't already have enough to fathom with the growing tide of Baby Boomers and Millennials entering the market for new homes, now there is a new type of household surfacing, the multigenerational household.

As these two generations settle into housing situations, more are choosing to settle together, creating demand for multigenerational homes. Much of the desire to nest under one roof stems from financial pressures and healthcare issues. This and many other insights into what is driving this multigenerational buyer are explored in this white paper.

The research was a dedicated pursuit of the 2018 BUILDER concept home, the reNEWable Living Home project with Meritage Homes, which will be revealed in January 2018 in Orlando. The home embodies the results of a thorough exploration of the multigenerational living experience, which informed design, engineering, and marketing adaptability.

In a survey conducted by BUILDER and Metrostudy, 86% of builder respondents said that buyer interest in multigenerational floor plans will be greater by 2022. So, this research and insight are critical as buyers ramp up interest, as builders create new solutions, and as the market for multigenerational becomes more competitive.
