Maybe it's time for modern cottage plans to have their moment. Some designers with whom I've spoken lately think that this, or variations of it, will be the next big trend.
Here's one that mixes in just the right amount of whimsy. A stone-covered arch welcomes visitors to the front porch. Note how the garage is tucked away to the side, so it doesn't ruin the effect.
Inside, everything's on one easy-to-get-around level (except the bonus room above the garage). Decorative ceiling treatments draw the eye up in the entry and, next to it, the formal dining room. A cathedral ceiling in the great room adds airiness.
The kitchen layout feels fresh and modern. And just around the corner, a mudroom holds a bench and lockers, plus a powder bath and the laundry room. Here's a smart detail: The laundry room opens directly into the main suite's bathroom, making it easy to throw in a load of towels.
Three secondary bedrooms sit across the home, each with a walk-in closet. One of them boasts a private bath, making it a good choice for visitors or an older child.
