Today, Pantone unveiled “Greenery” (Pantone 15-0343) as its anticipated and influential Color of the Year for 2017. Described as "a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring", the selection is intended to encourage the world to “take a deep breath, oxygenate, and reinvigorate,” according to a release issued by the institute.
“While Serenity and Rose Quartz, the Pantone Color of the Year 2016, expressed the need for harmony in a chaotic world, Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute in the release. “Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalize and unite, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
The company says Greenery is a shade that is omnipresent and a constant on the periphery in many sectors of design and the arts—only now being pulled to the forefront. In home décor and architecture, Pantone suggests adding Greenery through living walls, terrariums, botanically-themed wallpaper, paint, accent furniture, and decor to create the illusion of nature indoors. In their first collaboration, Pantone has partnered with Airbnb to bring Greenery to life through an undisclosed “experience” in early 2017.
The color forecasters study and examine manufacturing and design trends, including fashion, street art, and travel destinations, as well as socio-economic conditions, to determine the upcoming year’s color. Last year, the company made a surprising announcement of two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, as a nod to gender equality. Greenery was selected this year to symbolize new beginnings.
“The tangy yellow-green speaks to our desire to express, explore, experiment and reinvent, imparting a sense of buoyancy,” said Eiseman. “Through its reassuring yet assertive vibrancy, Greenery offers us self-assurance and boldness to live life on our own terms, during a time when we are redefining what makes us successful and happy.”
