In the near future, when potential buyers re-enter the market after the threat of COVID-19 has subsided, it is apparent that their experiences will influence what they are looking for in their new homes, according to U.S. News and World Report contributor Lisa Larson.

“There’s no doubt that the coronavirus pandemic has changed our way of life,” says Larson. “In particular, sheltering in place has made us think about the concept of home in a new light. There’s little doubt that homebuyers who enter the market after the risk of COVID-19 is in the rearview mirror will have a whole new set of priorities in place for their home search.”

According to Larson, these priorities will include:

  • Natural light and larger living spaces
  • Improved cooking areas
  • Private spaces, including a den or finished basement
  • Energy-efficient home functions, such as weather-stripping and double-pane windows
  • Workout and home gym space
  • Outdoor living spaces, including balconies and yards
  • Space and tech infrastructure to work from home
  • Multifamily amenities that prove useful in a quarantine situation, such as package reception and multiple elevator banks.
