Sustainable Steel Home, San Diego

Custom Home / 3,000 to 5,000 Square Feet

2 MIN READ

When San Francisco architect Mark Macy began designing this San Diego house, he already knew much about the habits, tastes, and lifestyle of his client. The house happens to be for his brother, an allergist who wanted a low-maintenance, energy-efficient residence. Influenced by their architect father and other Southern California mid-century modernists, Macy designed a steel-and-concrete-masonry house containing an entry atrium and a central courtyard. Including these outdoor spaces within the home’s footprint allows for plenty of natural ventilation, and it also connects the interiors with the outside in true mid-century spirit.

The house maximizes its infill location by providing city and water views to the main rooms, which all occupy the second floor. Photovoltaics produce on-site power, and rainwater harvesting meets the site’s irrigation needs. Lots of glass, both transparent and translucent, helps with daylighting and passive solar. “There’s great light in this house,” said one judge.
