Designed to be a place of relaxation and retreat, The Farm in Santa Ynez, Calif., was built by Patterson Custom Homes’ founder Andrew Patterson and designed by Brandon Architects’ principal Christopher Brandon for Patterson’s family. The 5,340-square-foot home takes cues from the surrounding landscape and its preservation. With 100-year-old oak trees throughout the 20 acres of rolling hills, the design team had to ensure every room would take advantage of the valley views and preserve as many trees in the process as possible.
For the home’s 500-square-foot kitchen, the goal was to make it functional and part of the main gathering area. The space utilizes an open-concept design, with the dining room, living room, and kitchen all in one main area with a large vaulted roof.

A large kitchen island anchors the cooking space, and product choices display a Santa Barbara country style with earthy tones, rich textures, and natural metals. Pocketing doors open three walls to the outdoors, which provide natural cooling for the home and an abundance of natural light.
The kitchen also includes a butler’s pantry with a glass door to the outside and was not enclosed from the kitchen to allow even more light to permeate the space.
