A challenging roofing renovation in Chapel Hill, N.C., has taken top honors in the Quality Asphalt Roofing Case-Study (QARC) awards from the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA).

The original roof’s different pitch heights, 11 skylights, and unique shape presented the roofing contractor with a challenge. Over four days, workers from Chapel Hill Roofing replaced the existing leaky roof with CertainTeed’s Landmark Series shingles in a cedar shake profile. The heavy dual-layered laminate shingle provided extra protection from the elements, says Bill Tate, owner of Chapel Hill Roofing.

“Most of the homes in the [North Carolina] area use asphalt shingles for their roof,” he says. “Shingles are easy to install and are incredibly durable. With proper maintenance, they can last 25 or 30 years before needing to be replaced.”

A CertainTeed Integrity roof system was used, consisting of pewter-colored Landmark Series shingles, a WinterGuard ice and water barrier, DiamondDeck underlayment, SwiftStart starter shingles and CertainTeed Ridge Vent and Shadow Ridge accessory shingles on the hips and ridges.

Each year, ARMA seeks out the most beautiful, affordable, and reliable asphalt roofing systems in North America. ARMA is now accepting submissions for both low- and steep-slope roofing project installations that were completed in 2017 for its 2018 awards program. The submission deadline is Dec. 31.
