A 9,000-square foot waterfront custom home in Jupiter, Florida suffered no damage when Hurricane Irma passed over in September, despite sustained 90+ mph winds and several inches of rainfall. Home owners Mary and Larry Anderson attribute the home’s survival to its strong construction and reliable building products, including its DaVinci Roofscapes composite roofing tiles.
The Andersons had chosen their roof tiles specifically for their compliance with Miami-Dade Code approval, which mandates high impact and wind resistance. "We know the DaVinci composite tiles are made to meet Miami Dade Code approvals, but we didn't think they'd be tested so soon," says Larry Anderson. "We just finished construction a few weeks before Hurricane Irma hit. With the path originally slated to have the eye pass right over Jupiter, we feared for the worst and hoped for the best.
The storm moved westward, but the Jupiter area experienced power outages and downed debris. “We literally just had some landscape damage. There wasn't a leak at all ... this roof held up extremely well to Mother Nature,” Larry Anderson says.
The Andersons’ home features a 12,000-square foot Bellaforté Shake roof in Mountain VariBlend. The composite tile is designed to resemble real cedar shakes, with added resistance to cracking, fading, mold, algae, fungus, insects, salt air, and sea spray.
Most DaVinci tiles, including the Bellaforté Shake roof, may be installed in High Velocity Hurricane Zones, including south Florida, that require a minimum wind velocity (three-second gust) of 150 mph. All DaVinci tiles are Class 4 impact rated and meet Class A fire resistance standards.
The roof was installed by Sun Catcher Roofing in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., which also installed three large copper cupolas and copper valley metal and flashing on the home. "This composite shake roof with the copper accents really creates an outstanding finish to the Anderson's home," says Dave Neddeff, owner of Sun Catcher Roofing. "The quality of the synthetic tiles, the manufacturer's lifetime limited material warranty and the simplicity of installation all make this a dream roof for a dream home."
