My colleague Shelley Hutchins wrote a fine story on the just-completed restoration of Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat. Here’s a slideshow of addtional images. No matter how well I know the timeline of modernism, I’m still amazed that the language was so fully developed more than 80 years ago. And this house’s history–its owners left it fleeing the Nazis–is a reminder that the movement emerged and matured in cataclysm. –b.d.s.
