As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, the home building industry is reflecting on the role housing can play in honoring the sacrifices of veterans and first responders. For Operation Finally Home, that mission is deeply personal, and increasingly urgent.

Since its founding, the nonprofit has partnered with builders and communities across the country to deliver mortgage-free homes and critical modifications designed to restore independence, dignity, and stability for America’s heroes.

As demand grows, so too does the organization’s impact, expanding from new-home construction into life-changing renovations that allow recipients to remain safely in place. BUILDER caught up with founder Dan Wallrath to learn more about what’s in the works this year.

Operation Finally Home has completed or planned nearly 500 projects since 2005. How has the mission evolved as demand from veterans and first responders has grown?

Following a request to remodel the home of a wounded Marine in 2005, I worked with my local home builder’s association and community to modify that family’s home at no cost. After this rewarding experience, I felt called to further support veteran families by providing a mortgage-free home. From there, I founded Operation Finally Home, a nonprofit organization that builds hope by providing mortgage-free homes, home modifications, and transitional housing to wounded veterans, first responders, and surviving spouses.

After our first home modification project, we shifted our focus to providing mortgage-free homes. In 2017, when Hurricane Harvey hit, we recognized a need to honor our veterans and first responders by providing them with a safe place to call home through home modifications, and this program has been growing ever since. Now, home modifications make up the majority of the work for Operation Finally Home.

With ongoing labor shortages, supply chain pressures, and rising costs, how has delivering mortgage-free homes become more complex, and how are you adapting?

Our mortgage-free home program does not work without the passion and commitment of builders and sponsors dedicated to changing the lives of America’s wounded, ill, or injured heroes. The builder is the driving force in completing a project, responsible for all facets of building the home. The builder, in partnership with Operation Finally Home, will undertake all necessary steps, from custom design to completion of their home. Homes are designed to meet the health challenges specific to each recipient.

Sponsors help alleviate some of the financial burdens and often assist with key pillar events—town hall, surprise, groundbreaking, notes of love, and dedication. The goal is to finish the project at no cost, including money raised or contributed for a special project. Based on the current needs of our recipients, the majority of our projects focus on home modifications, which significantly reduce the financial burden.

What are some of the most impactful home features or modifications you’ve incorporated to support veterans’ recovery, independence, and long-term quality of life?

Our home modification program is designed to help veterans and first responders remain safely and comfortably in their homes by making critical improvements that enhance safety, accessibility, independence, and quality of life.

Some of the most impactful modifications include wheelchair ramps, bathtub-to-roll-in shower conversions, widened doorways, and other accessibility upgrades that improve mobility within the home. We also address essential needs such as replacing aging HVAC systems, installing new roofs, and completing weatherization improvements. While these may seem like basic home repairs, they often make the difference between a veteran being able to age in place independently or facing significant challenges in their daily life.

What’s next for Operation Finally Home?

We have aggressive growth goals over the next 12 to 15 months—to complete 100 projects, including modifications, mortgage-free homes, and transitional housing. We have studied areas with more veteran-dense populations and anticipate more regionally focused projects in Florida and Georgia.

As Operation Finally Home continues to grow, we hope our legacy is one of lasting faith, gratitude, and tangible action. For the veterans and first responders we serve, that legacy is stability, dignity, and the knowledge that their sacrifice was seen, valued, and remembered—not just in words, but in meaningful support for them and their families.
