Artificial intelligence is quickly moving from novelty to necessity in the construction industry, according to the 2026 U.S. Houzz State of AI in Construction & Design Industry report. More than half of construction firms (52%) now use AI for everyday business tasks, up 20 percentage points from 2025, while another 34% are actively exploring AI solutions.
The report suggests builders are finding measurable returns from the technology. Construction firms using AI report saving an average of 4.7 hours per week, with nearly one-third saving eight or more hours weekly. Houzz estimates those efficiency gains translate into an average annual productivity benefit of $244,000 per construction firm.
While AI is increasingly touching all areas of the business, sales and marketing emerged as the most common application, with 64% of construction firms using the technology in those functions. Social media content creation is the leading use case, utilized by 74% of AI adopters. AI adoption in planning and design also surged, with 61% of firms now using the technology in those workflows.
One of the fastest-growing applications for builders is the creation of pre-project visuals, which jumped from 42% to 70% year over year. The technology, like Zonda’s Envision, is increasingly being used to help clients visualize projects before construction begins, streamlining communication and supporting decision-making early in the sales process.
Beyond marketing and design, builders are incorporating AI into project management and administrative functions. The most common construction-specific application remains generating estimates and proposals, used by 87% of AI adopters. Task creation and tracking has grown significantly, with 70% of firms leveraging AI for those activities, while scheduling applications increased to 43% from 33% a year earlier.
Despite growing confidence in the technology, concerns remain. Nearly all construction and design professionals surveyed (95%) reported some level of concern about AI, with reliability and accuracy topping the list. Still, 97% believe AI will have an impact on the industry over the next five years, underscoring the expectation that the technology will continue reshaping how projects are designed, marketed, sold, and managed.
Among construction firms that have adopted AI, the report also found that:
- 80% use it daily.
- 16% use it weekly.
- Only 4% use it rarely.
