Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) acting secretary Adrianne Todman kicked off the 2024 Innovative Housing Showcase (IHS) on the National Mall by announcing a HUD program focused on manufactured housing.

“I am pleased to announce this morning that we are launching a new program to invest in manufactured home communities,” Todman said during a kick-off event at the National Mall. “Starting today, HUD will give residents and resident-centered organizations affordable financing options to purchase, refinance, and rehab communities of manufactured homes. We are creating a tool so that folks can stabilize their communities and also keep their communities affordable. Manufactured homes have a place in the future of housing.”

Todman highlighted initiatives supported by HUD during the kick-off event, including efforts to drive down housing costs and build more homes faster and more efficiently than before.

“We have put forward robust funding plans to make sure that we are resourcing families where they are. This is a critical issue for all of us and for our economy,” Todman said of HUD’s housing-related efforts in recent years. “We are modernizing our rules. As costs have gone up, we have increased our FHA loan limits to make sure that families who want to buy a home are able to afford one using our financing tools. We are getting into the ADU [space], making sure we can finance ADUs. We are [also] modernizing our rental assistance program and offering financial incentives to communities to break down barriers to housing production.”

The 2024 IHS is designed to raise awareness of innovative and affordable housing designs and technologies that have the potential to increase housing supply, lower the cost of construction, increase energy efficiency and resilience, and reduce housing expenses.

The event, which will run through June 9, will feature more than 40 exhibitors from 18 states including full-sized, enterable prototype homes and demonstrations of innovative technologies that address affordability and resilience. In addition to the exhibitors, a HUD-funded printer that will be used to build 3D-printed homes in Alaska will also be on display on the Mall.

“The American Dream of homeownership, we need to make sure it’s a dream for everyone,” Tom Perez, senior advisor and assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, said at the National Mall. “When I think about the meetings that we have had at the White House recently, the issue of housing has been either the most or second most discussed issue. As we travel around the country, whether it’s people living at 10% of AMI (Area Median Income), people at 50% to 60% of AMI, or [people at] 100% of AMI, housing is a challenge.”

In addition to the displays on the National Mall, the event will feature educational programming highlighting technologies and innovation. The exhibitions and sessions will, in part, focus on energy-efficiency and climate resiliency and how housing technology and innovation can play a role in solutions.

“We have to meet people where they are [with housing solutions]. And in order to meet people where they are, we have to innovate, innovate, innovate,” Perez said. “That’s what [the IHS] is about. [These solutions] have applications in every corner of the country.”

The 2024 IHS is co-sponsored by HUD, the International Code Council, the Manufactured Housing Institute, the National Multifamily Housing Council, and the Structural Building Components Association (SBCA).
