Downtown Digs

By Carolyn Weber

First came the Metro, retail, restaurants, and the MCI center, now the residential component is completing the equation in a formerly down-and-out part of Northwest Washington. AvalonBay Communities’ $50 million Gallery Place project will house 203 upscale apartments and 8,600 square feet of retail space. “I am committed to turning our downtown into a residential community where people can work, shop, and live,” said the District’s Mayor Anthony Williams who was on hand for the groundbreaking. Avalon at Gallery Place will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2003.
