Looking for design inspiration for The Chapman at Peninsula Town Center, architects with Torti Gallas showed residents pictures of local Hampton, Va., historic buildings that no longer exist, asking them which ones they missed. The answers included a red brick hotel, a blue music hall, and a classical bank building. Modern incarnations of the façades of all three appear in The Chapman, a mixed-use building designed to be the first piece of a live, shop, work, and recreate project on the former site of the Coliseum Mall.

The Chapman is a 158-unit, wood-frame apartment building that rests atop a concrete podium of retail space. From the street, the structure looks like a series of historic buildings, yet it is really two buildings connected by a pedestrian bridge on the second floor that allows residents to go back and forth without going to the street level.

The apartments, ranging in size from 650-square-foot studios to 1,508-square-foot three-bedrooms, and in price between $1,005 and $2,020 a month, were fully leased in six months. The project appealed to single professionals, active military, and empty-nesters, says Brian O’Looney, its architect. “It’s a real place,” says O’Looney, “part of an urban fabric. We have plans for a whole residential district that will grow off the north side of the building.”
