This modern treasure sits on the same sort of generic 50-foot lot that has been the bread and butter of L.A. neighborhoods for more than half a century. But beyond that, there’s little about it that’s routine.
Architects Erla Dogg Ingjaldsdottir and Tryggvi Thorsteinsson went green to the core, specifying foam insulation, radiant-heat concrete flooring, exterior panels made with 30 percent recycled content, and proper orientation for passive solar and ventilation.
Built with “materials in their most organic form,” the house includes no chemicals, carpets, tiles, or paint. But it doesn’t feel stark thanks to some playful, clever turns. Among them: a kitchen island (with built-in seating) made out of recycled tires and wrapped in orange Corian; floating blue silicon stair treads; recycled rubber bathroom sinks; built-in bookshelves that double as staircase railings; and a steel-framed window seat with magnetic cushions that can be adjusted for bodies of different sizes. Who said green couldn’t be fun?
