With decades of experience researching how resilient design can prevent moisture damage in buildings, William Rose, professor emeritus at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and head of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, is a well-known resource and leader. Rose authored Water in Buildings: An Architect’s Guide to Moisture and Mold and has written energy guidelines for historic buildings. He also has developed a membrane-based plate-type enthalpy exchanger (a mechanism that produces energy from heat and moisture) and prepared guidelines for normalizing outdoor weather to assess the consequences moisture has on energy interactions. His research has led to considerable improvements in the way the housing community predicts moisture content, treats foundations, prevents damage to pipes, and leverages design to take advantage of improved airtightness.
