Developed by Sajiv Singh, Carnegie Mellon University’s Aerial Robotic Infrastructure Analyst (ARIA) method of modeling uses low-flying drones that can quickly analyze infrastructure in coordination with 3D imaging and planning. The safe and accurate surveying system builds a rich 3D model of the structure to allow for new methods of analysis and interaction with the data that is being collected. This process solves typical surveying issues by combining the perspective of robotics, vision-based data processing, civil engineering condition assessment, and structural analysis perspectives. ARIA’s capabilities also are being used to solve many infrastructure problems, such as the inspection and assessment of power transmission lines.
