Privately held real estate development company LStar Ventures is developing a 1,500-acre sustainable community 12 miles south of Boston. Dubbed Union Point, the urban community will include over 4,000 private residences, 10 million square feet of commercial space, 1,000 acres of open space, and 50 miles of hiking and biking trails. The company, based in Raleigh, N.C., plans to do more than develop the site of a former naval air station. LStar chief executives envision smart technology enhancements for the systems that serve the neighborhood, such as driverless shuttles, heated sidewalks, and a super-resilient energy grid.

The New York Times reports LStar has enlisted General Electric (GE) as a partner for the project to help with its “smart city” amenities. GE intends to use the community as a laboratory for testing its new products and systems, including “intelligent” lighting, or street lights with sensors that can track sound, light, and traffic conditions.
