Clayton Homes is combining thoughtful small-space living with luxury design in the production builder’s answer to the tiny home movement. Its line of Designer Cottages has two models--Low Country (starting at $124,724) and Saltbox (starting at $131,885)--each featuring one bedroom and one bath in about 450 square feet.
Architect Jeffrey Dungan designed the homes, and the company says that what the models lack in square footage they make up for in luxury finishes and other features. Vaulted ceilings and expansive windows on three sides make the homes feel large and fill the space with natural light. Brand-name appliances and oak hardwood floors lend a luxury feel, and owners can enjoy the outdoors on a covered front porch.
The modular homes are built indoors in Clayton’s Alabama facility and then permanently affixed to the homeowner’s property. With sustainability in mind, they use energy-efficient kitchen appliances, water heaters, and windows. Buyers have the option to add a 1,000-gallon cistern for rainwater collection to their model.
