Headed by founding principals Angela Brooks and Larry Scarpa, The Six is a 52-unit affordable housing project in Los Angeles that offers disabled, homeless veterans permanent shelter and comfort while redefining the traditional form of veteran housing. The firm’s innovative design emphasizes community-oriented, interactive public spaces that eschew traditional solid walls and fences in favor of an open, carved-out cube fitted with strategically placed windows. Located in LA’s MacArthur Park area—which packs 38,000 people per square mile—the structure also incorporates energy-efficient measures and LEED-Platinum building standards. The project’s private apartments are oriented toward the building’s social spaces, but also maintain a visual connection to the street below. Bright and welcoming support centers on the main floor provide rehabilitation services, and a green roof features an edible garden, public patio, and panoramic views of LA. The Six empowers those who live there, and helps heal some of the city’s most vulnerable residents through a supportive refuge that fosters reconnection.
