Al Tozer

Al Tozer, architectural designer with landscape architect firm Tozer Design, worked with homeowners Barbara Scott and Thomas Elliot on Desert Rain, the first residential project to meet all requirements of the Living Building Challenge. The 2,236-square-foot, single-story home captures enough rainwater for 100% of its needs and maintains a net-zero solar energy system. Throughout the design and building process, Scott and Elliot opened their home to visitors of all ages, sharing with them the seven “petals” underlying the Living Building Challenge: site, water, energy, health, materials, equity, and beauty. Hundreds of local students, green organizations, contractors, and community members were able to see these sustainable principles in action, viewing building materials, technologies, and construction techniques firsthand.
