Project Description
Located on a wooded lot in Mclean, Virginia, this project is a modest renovation of a contemporary house originally constructed in 1978. Finishes were updated in a previous renovation, but the 2,600 square feet floor plan remained mostly intact. In this most recent renovation, 650 square feet of living space is added and the interior spaces are rearranged. Ceiling heights are increased in the entry hall and main living spaces to enhance their sense of volume and to diversify and define the spatial qualities throughout the main level. Goals for the project included fulfilling the owner’s desire for an open floor plan, providing large walls for an expansive art collection, incorporating the wooded views and infusing the spaces with natural light. Large expanses of floor to ceiling glass magnify the woodland views, making them integral to the architecture. Individual spaces in the generally open floor plan are defined with a series of isolated planar walls which also accommodate large pieces of art. The new overall form of the house consists of four volumes which vary in height to respond to the existing horizontal massing. These vertical moments liberate the spaces within. Interior finishes are kept to a minimum and are void of moldings and trim so that the space, the art, the views and the light become the defining elements of the project.
