Project Description
Developed by Best Practice Architecture in collaboration with Hybrid Architecture and Steven Lazen, Big Mouth House is a forward-thinking approach to multi-family living. Each unit within the project is a flexible urban home with a studio space, main living area and rooftop deck. Black metal cladding envelops the exterior_bringing a cohesiveness to the project. Custom pink powder-coated details, as well as a rooftop mural by a popular Seattle artist, provide pops of color to enliven the dark facade. In contrast to the black exterior, the project's interiors are airy, open spaces. All three units were designed with a lower level income Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). These ADUs are connected to the interior of the townhomes, but also come equipped with a separate entrance. This unique feature can be used as an extension of the family home (a guest suite, office, or family room) or as a way to generate additional income as a short or long term rental. Units A and B are 1,420 square feet each. The ADU units are located on the lower level. The second level has two bedrooms and a bathroom. And the third floor includes a living room, dining room and kitchen. These elevated main living areas take full advantage of city views. Unit C is 1,850 square feet. The lower level contains the ADU unit, an office area and a zone for bikes. On the second floor, an open kitchen connects to the dining and living room, where a large floor to ceiling cantilevered window looks over downtown. Bedrooms and laundry are on the upper level, as well as a guest bathroom and stairway to the roof. As city populations continue to grow, architects can look to projects like this for smart, innovative solutions to urban living and multi-family design.
