The work of start-up makers and legacy manufacturers alike will be on display this month at New York’s NYCxDesign, which aims to bring architects, designers, manufacturers, specifiers, and consumers to the creativity hub for an 11-day long series of talks, expos, and more. Among them: the 26th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), held May 17 to 20, and the fourth annual WantedDesign, held May 16 to 19, which together will showcase the work of nearly 700 exhibitors. Regardless of whether you’ll be in New York to indulge your own design cravings, whet your appetite with a preview of the products that will be on display.
Otto by Andrew Franz, Andrew Franz Architect
New York–based architect Andrew Franz, AIA, infused his new series of furniture and luminaires with trademarks of midcentury design—modularity, solid-wood construction, and material contrast. Otto includes the Box Tables (shown), light fixtures, and storage cabinets. Available in four wood species, the tables’ frames are finished with natural oil or wax and are paired with Corian, wood, leather, or stone tops.
Park Place, Yabu Pushelberg
Toronto- and New York–based studio Yabu Pushelberg’s minimalist bar stool design for Avenue Road features a steel frame finished in polished rose-hued copper or powdercoated in a variety of colors. Park Place measures 48cm wide, 44 cm deep, and 105cm tall.
IC Lights, Flos
Inspired by the movements of a juggler, London-based designer Michael Anastassiades’ IC Lights for Flos appear to balance a 7.87”-diameter spherical glass diffuser on slender metallic stems. The series is offered in pendant (shown), table, floor, and wall-mounted versions. Frame finishes include brassed steel, and brushed and transparent varnished.
Pylon, Tom Dixon
The trusses and exo-skeletons that keep bridges and tall buildings upright inspired the frame of Tom Dixon’s Pylon series of occasional and dining tables. Made of hand-welded, copper-plated steel rods, the base supports a smoked-glass top. The series launched at Salone in April and will be showcased at ICFF.
Wu Side Table, Egg Collective
The Brooklyn, New York–based studio will launch the Wu Side Table at ICFF. Available in solid wood or a lacquer finish, the table measures 18.5” tall and 14.5” in diameter. Two of the studio’s co-founders, Crystal Ellis and Stephanie Beamer, were named to this year’s Forbes’ “30 under 30” list for work on their minimalist furniture pieces and commissions that include a seating area at the Lincoln Center in New York.
Spin Light, Lasvit
Paris-based designer Lucie Koldová crafted Spin Light for Czech glass installations fabricator Lasvit with a form that emulates a child’s toy top. Made of hand-blown glass and metal, the LED-powered luminaires can be suspended alone or as a group.
Vero Furniture, Duravit
Duravit is growing its Vero collection of bath fixtures with the addition of consoles and cabinets. From Zurich, Germany–based designer Kurt Merki, Jr., the furniture maintains the series’ rectilinear form factor while offering features such as a front-facing open compartment and towel rack, integrated Bluetooth, ambient lighting below the console, soft-close tracks, and optional walnut or maple drawer organizers. Six finishes are offered.
Hush, David Trubridge Lighting
Hush, developed by Marion Courtillé for the New Zealand–based David Trubridge lighting studio, is designed to emit light and to absorb sound. The LED-lamped luminaire features a shade of synthetic felt panels made entirely from polyester fibers and includes a minimum of 65% post-consumer recycled material. Offered in six colors (gray, shown).
