The company anticipates the research will apply to other industries and certainly the research on autonomous driving will shape urban development designs.
Toyota hopes a $35 million research investment will help it "revolutionize" materials science, as well as identify new fuel cell catalysts capable of powering zero-emission and carbon-neutral vehicles.
The $35 million investment will roll out over the next four years, according to a news release from the company.
The Toyota Research Institute has partnered with several universities, companies and research firms in its quest. One of the ground-floor collaborators is the University of Michigan, according to the release.
