Testing Concrete Countertop Sealers

1 MIN READ

If you’ve ever wondered about the resiliency and effectiveness of the sealers you or your subcontractors use on concrete countertops, the Concrete Countertop Institute (CCI) has the answer. The organization has created the first sealer stain testing protocol to test and compare commercially available concrete countertop sealers.

The testing protocol, which includes specific instructions to test and compare the stain and acid resistance of concrete countertop sealers, will allow fabricators and installers to perform their own tests of sealers on the varying concrete mixes and application methods they use. The protocol also includes information on household substances to use in the tests, how to apply substances and measure results, definitions and photographs of “staining” and “etching”, and how to score the tests and assemble/analyze the data.

Using the test protocol will allow concrete countertop pros to set client expectations, develop accurate contract wording, and develop an owner’s guide for their concrete countertops, according to CCI’s president, Jeffrey Girard. CCI members can access the results of the organization’s test, using its new protocol, on 27 commercially available concrete countertop sealers and download the sealer testing protocol at www.concretecountertops.net.
