The kids wing, with two children's bedrooms (each with a private bath) and a playroom, occupies the second floor. "We designed a big landing at the top of the stairs," says Looney, "because this is a modest house, and it allows a little bit of breathing room."

The girl's room, painted with Sherwin Williams' Jaunty Yellow, has practical, easy-to-clean beadboard wainscoting with handy hooks above. On the wild side, a wacky bed was crafted from real tree branches.

The bright-yellow girl's room features a flowers and insects theme, while the boy's room is dark and masculine with custom-made, industrial-style headboards. A third flex space could be an extra bedroom, but it's modeled as a playroom, with whimsical colors and pivoting "windows" affording views down the staircase.
