Parkside residences make use of an overlooked lot on a commercial strip in Austin, Texas.
The spec houses overcame other obstacles in addition to the unlikely site. The site was on an unstable, 60-foot slope, and the client wanted the project team to help her buy, subdivide, and build on the lot.
Views of the outdoors in unexpected places like the shower or above the tub and brings added natural light and a feeling of space to these petite baths.
The judges also liked the striking indoor-outdoor relationships, and the connection to the city.
The project team used richly-grained walnut cabinetry and exterior wood screens to warm up the modernist spec homes.
"The project puts outdoor spaces on a podium and celebrates them," said the judges, who liked the approachably built spa vibe and the compact design in a trasitional neighborhood.
