Bastyr University's student village is located at the edge of an existing conifer forest, and great care was taken to preserve the trees. Four large Douglas firs occupy the center of the village with cottages sited around them.
By constructing a series of cottages, project planners gently tied the residences into the landscape.
Private bedrooms feature radiant-heat floors, built-in cabinetry, and individual programmable thermostats. All lighting fixtures are connected to occupancy sensors.
The ceiliing of the shared great room is made of exposed glulam beams with tongue-and-groove decking. The common kitchen contains Energy Star-certified appliances and custom cabinets constructed with FSC-certified fir veneer over non-urea-formaldehyde substrate.
Tempered glass doors let in light but provide a quiet place to work in the study room.
