California has bounced back from the housing crisis, says MarketWatch's Jacob Passy. Of the 20 housing markets that had the biggest rebounds, half are located in California, with Modesto leading the pack. A new report from Owners.com says the price per square foot in the city has increased nearly 115% from its crisis-era trough to its current level of $182 per square foot.

Other states with cities that experienced major rebounds include those that were hit hardest during the Great Recession: Nevada, Arizona and Florida.

While the home prices in Modesto have not returned to their pre-crisis levels, San Francisco and San Jose, for example, have experienced record-breaking price appreciation. Nationally, home prices have recovered 36% from the low point hit during the recession.
