CURBED DC's Michelle Goldchain reports that while researching the most gentrified areas of the United States, digital data site RENTCafé created a list of the top 20 ZIP codes with the biggest increases in home values from 2000 to 2016. Two ZIP codes in Washington, D.C., made the list— ZIP code 20001 was in second place and 20010 in placed eighteenth.
The 20001 ZIP code includes sections of Bloomingdale, Shaw, Mt. Vernon Triangle, and LeDroit Park. According to RENTCafé, home values in this area have increased by 207%, and household income has jumped 163%. The percentage of residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher also escalated by 212%.
Topping the list as the most gentrified ZIP code in the nation is 90014 in Los Angeles, California. Here, home values have grown by 707 percent, while household income and higher education have increased by 95 percent and 857 percent, respectively.
For these findings, RENTCafé looked to the 2000 Census and the 2016 American Community Survey, focusing on median home value, median household income, and the population that holds a bachelor’s or higher degree.
