Brain Drain

A recent study by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce found that 50 percent of students graduating college typically leave the state. One of the biggest reasons: They can’t afford housing. Between 1990 and 2000, the greater Boston area lost 15.9 percent of its young population, compared with a 5.4 percent national relocation average. The study found that 80 percent of the students who moved said they would have stayed in the area if more affordable housing and better jobs were available.
