For San Francisco architects and builders, challenging lots and tight footprints are a way of life. So are stiff historic regulations, zoning laws, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). So, when it came time to renovate a shingle-style house nestled on a tree-lined cul de sac, architects David Gast and Dennis Budd of Gast Architects http://www.gastarchitects.com in San Francisco had their work cut out for them. Playing nice with the planning authorities and making sensible compromises cut out six months of approvals time.
