Using lot and living area size data from the residential properties on its listing service, Point2Homes has uncovered the city centers with the most and least room for residents to ‘move’ around during the COVID-19 lockdown, whether in a backyard or within their homes.
Out of the top 50 most populous cities and boroughs in the U.S., Raleigh, N.C.’s homes feature the largest median lot size at 15,000 square feet. (Lot rankings do not include condos or townhomes.) Each of the top eight cities in the ranking offers median lot sizes of 10,000 square feet or above, with No. 9 – Austin – falling just 25 square feet short.
Brooklyn, N.Y. falls to the bottom of this list at No. 50, with a median lot size of 2,250 square feet. The Bronx, N.Y. is close behind at 2,500 square feet, followed by Philadelphia at 2,757 and San Francisco at 2,840. (Data for NYC boroughs was calculated based on Propertyshark.com data. Manhattan, N.Y. was not included as no lot data was available.)
Colorado Springs, Colo. has the largest median living area by far at 2,930 square feet, followed by Raleigh, N.C. at 2,451 square feet. In all, 12 cities have a median living area of 2,000 square feet or above.
On the opposite end, Boston, Mass. has the lowest median living area in the ranking at 1,127 square feet. (If counted, Manhattan, N.Y.’s median living area would be the lowest in the analysis at 1,100 square feet.)
Boston, Miami, Staten Island, N.Y., Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Detroit, and Philadelphia all have a median living area of under 1,500 square feet. Point2Homes notes that these cities have some of the highest population densities in the nation, and as such a greater concentration of condos or smaller homes.
