Three-plus story homes accounted for about 3% of detached and attached single-family completions in 2009, rose to about 5% by 2013, and has since remained relatively constant in proportion to overall completions, according to Census Bureau data. In 2017, just under 800,000 new single-family homes were completed, and of that number 42,000 detached and attached homes had three or more stories.

The number of attached and detached single-family home starts with three or more stories has risen from 38,400 in 2016, the first year for which data is available on three-plus story homes from the Survey of Construction, to 41,200 in 2017.

Of the 729,000 single-family detached homes started in 2017, only 18,200, or 2.5%, had three or more stories. At the same time, 22% of all townhome starts in 2017, or 23,000 out of just over 100,000, had three or more stories.
