The Exploration Green detention pond and park project in Clear Lake City, Tex. completed the first of its five construction phases in March 2018. Exploration Green Conservancy, the nonprofit organization behind the Houston-area project, plans to host a grand opening event on April 28th.

Exploration Green’s first phase started construction in 2016, was about 80% complete at the time Hurricane Harvey hit Clear Lake City last fall. The project is credited with protecting at least 150 homes from flooding. When complete, the park is expected to protect between 2,000 and 3,000 homes located near floodplains.

The second phase of construction should begin by the end of April, and the entire project is expected to be complete by 2021. Park features will include sports fields, beaches, a 1-mile trail and 750 newly-planted trees.
