The Zeidler Residence is more an assembled complex of glass rooms, courtyards, and roof decks than a single house. Built for entertaining, nearly every space in the 3,284-square-foot, bluff-top aerie has a view of the Pacific Ocean and opens to the outside.
The two-and-a-half-story main house, built on the ocean side of the lot, contains the major living spaces, including a single bedroom with a balcony facing the sea, a study, a wine tasting room in the basement, and a roof-top deck with a full kitchen. A stairwell on the back became a vertical gallery for the owners’ art and collections from their travels.
The second structure, which sits behind the first and across a rear courtyard and pool, houses three guest suites as well as the garage and a second roof deck with ocean views. Even the guest rooms offer glimpses of the Pacific through the glass windows of the main home’s first floor and a glass panel that screens the pool from the often blustery winds.
“The winds were an issue,” says architect Takashi Yanai. “That’s why we went with the courtyard protected by the two structures.”
