Affordable Luxury at Scale: How Schuber Mitchell Homes Builds Value into Every Square Foot

From thoughtful floor plans to high-end finishes, this Joplin, Mo.-based builder delivers more than buyers expect and at a price they can afford.

Walk into any Schuber Mitchell home and you’ll find built-in wood shelving in every closet, high-end fixtures and granite or quartz countertops. What you won’t find: a million-dollar price tag.

Joplin, Mo.-based Schuber Mitchell Homes specializes in what the company calls “affordable luxury,” with homes selling for around $325,000.

Daman Schuber, Co-Founder

“It’s about finding that sweet spot where buyers feel like they’re getting a deal but without sacrificing the things that matter,” says Co-Founder Daman.

This philosophy extends to functional design choices too. Most floor plans connect the primary closet directly to the laundry room—an intuitive feature that costs little to implement but adds real convenience for homeowners. Mechanical systems are placed in garage closets rather than attics or crawlspaces, making routine service easier and more discreet.

Then there’s the primary bath, a standout feature in many Schuber Mitchell homes, even in homes as modest as 1,700 square feet. “We’re doing freestanding tubs, dual vanities, glass-enclosed showers. These are details you don’t usually see at our price point,” he says.

From disaster to destiny

In 2011, an EF5 tornado tore through Joplin, causing nearly $3 billion in damage and leaving thousands without homes. Contractors from across the country arrived to meet the demand, but in the rush to rebuild, quality wasn’t a priority.

Schuber and Dan Mitchell wanted to do something about it. They contacted Rick Betenbough of Betenbough Homes, the top builder in West Texas, asking for his help to rebuild their city. Betenbough offered something more valuable: his expertise and support. “He said, ‘Why don’t you guys do that? You love Joplin and live here. I’ll help you,’” Schuber recalls. Betenbough gave them house plans and helped fund the first 10 homes to get them started.

A proven model

That partnership laid the groundwork for what would become Schuber Mitchell Homes. More than a decade later, the company continues to build on those principles: community-first, and quality-driven construction that delivers lasting value.

Schuber Mitchell’s homes cater to three distinct buyer segments: downsizers, first-time buyers, and move-up families.

“We’re seeing a lot of grandparents chasing their grandkids,” Schuber notes. “They’re used to luxury, but they don’t need the size anymore. What they do want is a well-built home with high-quality finishes—and we deliver that.”

First-time buyers are drawn to the value equation, while move-up buyers—typically dual-income families—are looking for larger lots, pool-ready backyards, and premium touches that still fit within a reasonable budget.

The Culture That Makes It Happen

What makes this level of execution possible at scale? Schuber credits his company’s deeply held values. “We require excellence, quality, and integrity, but we also care deeply about people,” Schuber says. “It’s a harder way to do business, but it’s the right way.”

That culture flows through the organization, from sales and design to purchasing and trade relationships. “If you ask our purchasing manager what his job is, he’ll say it’s not just to get the best price. It’s to care deeply about our partners.”

The company has grown every year since its founding, with 2025 poised to be its best year yet. (It’s on track to build 1,000 homes this year.) Even with that growth, the goal remains the same: “Our vision is to honor God and enrich the lives of others,” Schuber says. “If we sell a bunch of homes and make money but don’t do those two things, we’ve failed.”
