Choosing a favorite vacation spot is a matter of personal preference. The salt-tinged breezes and blue waters of the beach beckon some homeowners, while others opt for sweeping mountain views and tree-shaded hikes. Second homes can serve as either weekend getaways or seasonal residences. And they can accommodate just one to two people or an entire extended family. But for all the variables, one constant holds true: More people are buying vacation houses than ever before. According to the National Association of Realtors, vacation home sales bucked the slowing housing market last year, with a 4.7 percent increase in 2006 sales over 2005 numbers.
